Aussie iPhone lovers, brace yourselves! Your next upgrade might not come with a physical SIM slot... or the price tag you’re expecting.

Rumours are swirling that the upcoming iPhone 17 series, expected in September, could launch in Australia with eSIM-only functionality. Meaning no more swapping out those little SIM cards. Why now? Well, the signs are all there. Apple’s latest iPads have already ditched the SIM tray, and in the U.S., eSIM-only iPhones have been the norm since the iPhone 14.

So, is Australia next?

At the same time, global pricing is under pressure thanks to Donald Trump's newly imposed tariffs on manufacturing powerhouses like China and Vietnam. Apple, which manufactures most of its devices in China, could face serious cost increases. Experts predict iPhones could jump in price by hundreds of dollars and Australia won’t be spared.

This pricing storm could affect other brands too (Samsung, OPPO, Motorola, HMD, we’re looking at you), but Apple remains the big-ticket item on everyone's radar.

So back to the question: Will your next iPhone be eSIM-only and more expensive?

It’s plausible. Apple may extend the eSIM-only feature to iPhones in Australia as it streamlines its global strategy and responds to supply chain cost pressures. However, until Apple makes an official announcement, this remains speculative.
